Marcus Rashford scored twice as a slick Manchester United won 2-1 and made it a miserable return to Old Trafford for Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho.

Almost a year after getting the bullet at United, Mourinho was back on Wednesday night, but it was his opposite number Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who triumphed with a superb home display from his young side.

Teenager Mason Greenwood was handed a starting role as Solskjaer made four changes to Sunday’s draw with Aston Villa as Scott McTominay, Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young and Greenwood all came into the side.

Mourinho, who was fired 351 days ago, made two changes, selecting Harry Winks and Lucas Moura in place of Tanguy Ndombele and Eric Dier.

Manchester United scored the opening goal of the evening after six minutes as Rashford slammed the ball under the goalkeeper at the near post after Lingard’s pass had fallen into his path.

United dominated proceedings until Tottenham hit back six minutes before half-time when an audacious piece of skill from the in-form Dele Alli flummoxed Fred and he fired the ball into the bottom corner.

United though, who were deflated going in at the break, scored soon after when Rashford, who saw an effort tipped on to the bar in the first half, was brought down by Serge Aurier, and the in-form striker scored from the spot.
