Manchester United will not make a move for Barcelona outcast Ousmane Dembele when the transfer window re-opens, according to pundit Steve Nicol.

The future of the former Borussia Dortmund man has been speculated on over the last few months, with Liverpool linked to the forward as an alternative to Timo Werner.

According to Sport, the LaLiga champions will place Dembele on the transfer list ahead of the upcoming market, even though the player would prefer to stay at Camp Nou.

Marca also recently claimed “the Frenchman is one of the transferable footballers on the squad” and the Spanish publication says Barca will take a cut-price €60m for the troublesome Frenchman – a loss of €80m on the player.

Over the weekend Manchester United were mentioned as suitors for the 23-year-old.

According to The Athletic, Barcelona’s Dembele would prove to be a cheaper alternative to Jadon Sancho, as he has two years remaining on his contract.

Former Liverpool defender Nicol, though, has rejected the notion that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men could make a move for the player.

Asked if Man Utd would make a move for Dembele, Nicol told ESPN: “Really, I mean really? No, no chance.

“Barcelona are not giving this guy away and I’m not so sure they could give him away. He’s done absolutely nothing to show why Barcelona paid over 100m for him

“There are question marks over him off the field as well and that is certainly not what Man Utd are about now. They are about bringing in young players, but players with good attitudes that have huge potential and that they think they can get it out of them.

“I don’t see that with Dembele. I think he is going to be one of these kids who will mosy along in his career and all we will see is ‘what if’.”

Nicol’s thoughts on the player are in direct contrast to his ESPN colleague Alejandro Moreno.

Moreno believes there is a player there and recently claimed that Liverpool boss Klopp was capable of getting Dembele firing again.

“Well it’s enticing and it’s intriguing to believe that if there was ever a manager out there who could well get the very best out of Ousmane Dembele it would be Jurgen Klopp,” Moreno, 40, told ESPN.

“And now, with the reports of Timo Werner perhaps going to Chelsea and Liverpool missing out on Timo Werner, that maybe if they’re going for a wide-area attacking player well maybe that could be Ousmane Dembele, why not?”
