Jose Mourinho began life in the Tottenham hotseat by holding talks with star striker Harry Kane and in a bid to reassure him over the club’s ambitions.

The Portuguese firebrand was appointed as the new Spurs boss on Wednesday morning, stepping into the hotseat less than 12 hours after the club had fired Mauricio Pochettino after a terrible start to the season.

Talismanic Spurs star Kane had a strong relationship with Pochettino and the former’s statement about the Argentine’s removal of boss illustrated the close ties they shared.

Getting Kane onside and firing on all cylinders will be key to Mourinho’s chances of success at Tottenham, which is why the new coach made it a priority to sit down and hold a one-to-one with the striker as soon as his first training session had finished.

And according to the Daily Mirror, Mourinho insisted to Kane that Tottenham were heading into a bright new era and that he should not consider a transfer away, while simultaneously making it clear to the striker he has a good chance of ending his wait to win a trophy.

The 26-year-old has only a League Cup and Champions League losers medals to his name so far and he admitted back in September he wanted to redress than balance.

“It’s time to turn the close margins into trophies and find a way to do it – there aren’t any excuses about being young any more,” Kane told the BBC back in September.

There has been ongoing speculation linking Kane with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Manchester City, but Mourinho, as per the report, has told the striker that Tottenham will now be in “win mode” with him in charge.

The paper suggests Mourinho has told Kane he can help end Spurs’ 11-year wait for a trophy and that success in the FA Cup and Champions League will be given full focus. Mourinho, who faces the media for the first time on Thursday afternoon, has also priortised climbing the league and trying to retain their place in the top four in the hope of satisfying Kane’s needs.

Mourinho, meanwhile, is reported to have given Tottenham the green light to bring a former star back to the club this summer.
