Man Utd have ramped up their efforts to land Portuguese midfield sensation Florentino Luis by sending scouts to see the player in person, but face stiff competition from cross-city rivals Manchester City in the race to sign the 20-year-old.
Just two months after losing Joao Felix to Atletico Madrid for a nine-figure sum, the Portuguese giants find themselves scrapping to keep another of their teenage prodigies, with Luis the latest to be in demand.
According to both the Daily Star and the Daily Record, and via Portuguese paper Record – both Manchester clubs want to bring in the tigerish midfielder, with City having seen a £55m bid rejected this summer.
The player is seen by Pep Guardiola as a potential long-term replacement for Fernandinho, and while the Blues eventually signed Rodri from Atletico, it’s claimed they could come back in either in January or next summer.
His arrival at Old Trafford could also trigger the exit of Nemanja Matic, who has found his chances in the first team limited so far this campaign.
The Portugal youth international currently has a release clause at €95m (£91m), but that could rise if he is rewarded with a new contract this term.
