A key threesome of defensive Liverpool stars could all play a part in their upcoming encounter with Man Utd after Jurgen Klopp provided positive updates on their fitness progression.

Liverpool have endured a challenging time in recent months with regards to injury as several high-profile stars have been unavailable to Klopp.

Despite the reduction in available playing personnel, the Reds’ form has not dipped.

Klopp’s men have opened up a 14 point gap to closest challengers Man City, with their rescheduled game versus West Ham still to come.

Centre-halves Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, as well as first-choice holding midfielder Fabinho have all spent time on the treatment table in recent weeks.

Fabinho has been missing since picking up ankle ligament damage in the Champions League draw with Napoli in November, while Matip and Lovren have suffered with knee and hamstring problems respectively since December.

In good news for Liverpool, all three could be set for a return to action this coming weekend as the Anfield club look to avenge the only league fixture in which they did not pick up three points.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official club website, Klopp said: “I wait really until they are on the pitch and somebody tells me they are allowed to do the full session,”

“It looks like Joel will be in, it looks like Fabinho will be in maybe a day later, I’m not sure. Dejan, maybe he can be in as well.

“That means a lot and helps massively of course. But we will see how it looks. The week is very important.

“The game on Sunday against United, we all know what people expect from us from that game. It will be a big one as well and we try to be ready for that.”

The prospective returns of the trio will be a welcome boost to Klopp with the Reds about to embark on another hectic period of fixtures.

Liverpool will play five matches in fourteen days beginning with their clash with Man Utd on Sunday, meaning all three will be required to share the burden of minutes.

The trio’s timely return will leave just James Milner and Naby Keita in the treatment room, with the duo still recovering from hamstring and groin injuries respectively.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are one of two Premier League clubs closing in on Man Utd’s 23-year dominance in the Deloitte’s Football Money League.
