Chris Sutton does NOT believe Liverpool have earned the right to be hailed as the greatest champions of the Premier League era, despite setting a host of records en-route to this season’s title.
Liverpool lifted their first league title in 30 years this season after winning 27 of their first 29 matches. That clinched the league in the shortest number of games. But Sutton suggests that any comparison between the champions past and present only makes for a good debate.
In an exclusive interview with TEAMtalk, the striker – a title winner with Blackburn in 1995 – has had his say. He believes Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool Class of 2020 have set records that may never be broken. However, he argues their greatness can only be judged over time.
“What we do know is that this is the earliest that any team has won it. Manchester City have been dominant over every team other than Liverpool in the last couple of seasons,” BT Sport analyst Sutton told us.
“Liverpool ran them close and credit to them. After last season, when they lost by a point, we were all sitting there thinking; how good are they? How do they get themselves up for this season after losing one game in the whole of last season? Could that be demoralising?
“We had the answers to those questions and what they have done this season has been fantastic. But I don’t know if they are the best champions we have seen.
“The beauty of the Premier League era is, there have been so many good teams who have won the league. You can make arguments for and against the lot of them.
“When you look at Jurgen Klopp and how charismatic he is, the players seem to love him. They adore him, he’s got something special. This season they’ve just been phenomenal. That determination and drive….
“They’ve blown City away and it’s a top City team, a brilliant team, who have been exceptional the last couple of seasons. To beat them by this far is pretty remarkable.
“It’s up to people the way they want to view Premier League winners, I don’t have a problem with that. Blackburn aren’t the most fashionable, and you had the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.”
Sutton recalls Blackburn success
Sutton believes Blackburn’s 1995 title win was ‘too long ago’ for people to consider them among the great Premier League champions, as he suggests comparisons between his side and Leicester’s famous victory in the 2015/16 title race are misplaced.
“I think that people have compared Leicester City’s triumph to Blackburn, but I’m not sure about that,” added Sutton. “That was a little bit different in respect to Blackburn, they pushed Manchester United close the season before they won it.
“Leicester just came out of nowhere. But I think the people of Blackburn, they’re happy with the title success. I’ve got great memories. They were a great team, but I think that’s why we all love football because we can all debate and get angry and irate, the different arguments.
“I guess that’s what we all like doing, isn’t it. I wouldn’t say pointless arguments, but they’re taking a team and having the debate.”
