Edwin van der Sar is staying at Ajax

Edwin van der Sar was back in Manchester on Wednesday.

The Ajax chief executive, who used to play for Man United, was in attendance for Vincent Kompany’s testimonial.

During the event, Edwin van der Sar addressed rumours linking him with a possible Man United return.

Manchester United have been looking to appoint a new director of football at Old Trafford for a long time.

This week, it was claimed that Ed Woodward had spoken to Van der Sar about filling that position.

Reportedly, Man United were willing to offer him around 1.5 million euros a year as a salary.

However, Van der Sar has openly confirmed he’s staying at Ajax. He said:

No (I’m not rejoining Man United), I’m focused on my job as chief executive at Ajax.

We had a fantastic year in Europe last year, also won the league in Holland.

We want Ajax at a higher European level and making sure we get back to the elite. That’s what we’re working on.

I’m enjoying my time at Ajax. We touched the top level last year and we have to make sure we have the best opportunity to stay there.

So where does that leave Man United?

Basically nowhere.

Against all the chatter of Man United’s intent to appoint a director of football, it’s been more than a year of searching without success.

As a result, Ed Woodward remains in charge of Man United’s recruitment policy.
