Philippe Coutinho has revealed what former manager Jurgen Klopp told him upon the completion of his season-long loan move to Bayern Munich, and divulged his thoughts on the German’s management style and character.
The Brazilian playmaker endured a tough time in his 18 months at the Camp Nou, leading to intense speculation that the ex-Anfield favourite could make a sensational return to Merseyside.
A level of interest was registered amid Klopp expressing his admiration for his former charge, but the Reds simply could not make the deal work from a financial standpoint.
Coutinho wound up joining Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich instead, and the player himself has revealed what Klopp told him following the move to Bavaria.
Speaking to German publication SportBild (via the Metro) Coutinho said: “He sent me a message and wished me luck.
“He said that Bayern are a big club and the Bundesliga a great league and that he is very happy to see me there.”
Coutinho’s latter years at Anfield coincided with the Reds returning to prominence as an English and European powerhouse following years of heartache under former managers Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers.
Speaking on the impact the German has made with the Reds and what makes him the manager he is, Coutinho said: “Klopp is simply a great coach, one of the best in the world, a real leader.
“I learned so much from him, especially on a mental level.
“He always finds the right one words, both before the game and during the game, and he always manages to get you back on track with the next opponent.
“He changed Liverpool and made them really strong again. It was a big honor to work with him.”
